Offshore Drilling-Fourteen Days-No Bona Fide Action by Democrat "Leaders"

Today marks two weeks of non-action by the no-drill Democrats on the lifting of the offshore drilling ban.  Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have made no bona fide moves to allow a vote lifting the moratorium.  Two weeks ago President George W. Bush put the ball in the US Congress' court by rescinding the Presidential order that had established the executive moratorium on such drilling.  Without Congressional action, the moratorium will remain in effect. The Democrat leaders have continued to bend the knee to the powerful environmental lobby by blocking attempts by Republican senators to bring a vote to the floor lifting the ban. GOP senators lead by Mitch McConnell have now established their own blockade of all legislation until the Democrat leader Reid allows a vote. The obstruction by the Majority leader guarantees continued delays in the ability of our country to explore and produce much needed oil and gas resources which have recently skyrocketed in price. Gasoline at the pump has risen to more than four dollars per gallon.  The health of the US economy will be in serious trouble if the obstinante Senator Reid fails to allow a vote to move forward.

An offshore drilling poll was released by Rasmussen at noon today.  Forty-two (42%) percent of those polled believe that offshore drilling is most important and forty-five (45%) believe that restricting speculators is most important.  Please note that these are not opposites.  To say they are, which Rasmussen does, is a false dichotomy.  Both can be done, but Senator Reid will not allow a vote on the offshore drilling ban because he knows that many Democrats will be politically forced to vote for drilling.  His most likely action will be to allow a little drilling here or there with obstructive restrictions that will allow a little bit of exploration and no drilling or exploration with the necessity for congressional approval of production later.  Some senators are attempting to craft compromise packages that will open certain offshore areas on the Alaskan north slope or offshore Alaska.  These piece meal tactics are a sham and will be rescinded as soon as the Democrats have the opportunity to do so.  Our nation needs a complete removal of the offshore drilling moratorium akin to the lead of  President Bush, and we need it now. Senator Kit Bond (Rep: MO) has introduced three amendments to the speculation bill that will do just that.  Every day of delay by the Democrat leadership will continue to damage our economy like a car wreck in slow motion.  How many days will it take and how much damage is enough for Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi.  Take action now Democrats, or be acted upon by the electorate.
